The Search Box Just Changed. For the First Time in 25 Years.

Google’s I/O 2026 wasn’t an update. It was a reset. Search is no longer a list of links, it’s an AI orchestration layer where agents complete tasks on your behalf. The search box now accepts text, images, files and video. It anticipates what you need before you finish typing.

AI Mode has crossed 1 billion monthly users. AI Overviews reaches 2.5 billion. Queries are more than doubling every quarter. Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the default model powering Search, delivering agentic, multi-step reasoning directly inside the results page.

Google has also launched Search Agents - background AI that monitors the web 24/7 and alerts users when something matches their criteria. Think of it as a personal research assistant that never sleeps. Agentic booking is live too: Google can now call businesses on a user’s behalf to schedule appointments in categories like home repair, beauty and pet care.

What this means: the era of ranking for keywords is giving way to being the answer an AI chooses to surface. Structured, schema-enabled content is no longer a nice-to-have - it’s how machines decide whether your brand exists. Entity authority and topical depth now determine visibility. And if your business isn’t set up to answer when an AI agent calls, you’re losing leads you’ll never know about.
